Craft Markets in Formentera

Craft Markets in Formentera

Formentera always leaves a mark on its visitors. The clean air, the cloudless skies, the smell of sea and traditions, the white sand of the beaches, the flavour of island cuisine,

the crystal-clear waters... all make up a set of memories that every year thousands of visitors cherish when they head back home. However, if we're talking about physical and palpable memories, there are few things that sum up this experience as perfectly as a purchase from one of the island's craft markets.

Craft Markets in Formentera

The Mediterranean, hippy and cosmopolitan personality of the island is shown in all its splendour at these markets where craftsmanship takes centre stage. Many creators, artisans and artists of all kinds have found their great source of inspiration on this pocket-sized island. Their pieces capture the essence and magic of a truly unique place. Jewellery, accessories, leather goods, textiles of all kinds, paintings, and even culinary bites... Everything has its place at Formentera's street markets.

There are three must-visits on the island: the Craft Market in La Mola, and the Craft Market and the Arts Market, both in the sleepy town of Sant Ferran de Ses Roques.

Craft Market of La Mola

The Craft Market in La Mola is held on Wednesdays and Sundays from 4.00 pm to 10.00 pm, in the tiny village of El Pilar de la Mola, about fourteen kilometres from the island's capital, Sant Francesc. It's easy to find: just follow the road that crosses the island and takes you up to La Mola lighthouse. The last stretch is simply spectacular thanks to the panoramic ascent before reaching the massif on which La Mola is located. Before reaching your destination, it's definitely worth stopping off at the Mirador de la Mola to enjoy stunning views of the Levante and Migjorn coasts of the island.

Once at the market, you'll find a whole host of stalls of all kinds and the odd food stand. All of them are the perfect excuse to buy something. Everything from T-shirts with original designs to exclusive pieces of jewellery, including senallons (wicker beach bags) reinterpreted by restless minds or leather shoes made by expert hands. The atmosphere is laid-back and casual. And, as we mentioned, the lighthouse at the end of the road is awaiting with spectacular views into infinity.

Craft Markets in Sant Ferran de Ses Roques

Meanwhile, another Craft Market is held in Sant Ferran de Ses Roques, just two and a half kilometres from the capital, and takes place every day, except Wednesdays and Sundays, from 8.30 am to midnight. These are incredibly convenient opening hours if you want to pick up a unique purchase without having to change your daytime plans. What's more, the Arts Market in Sant Ferran shares exactly the same timetable. The differences lie in what's on sale: one more focused on crafts and one more based around art. People say that deep down they share the same passion for creativity and the same quality: the skill of expert hands and the constant quest for creative minds. Whatever the case, they're a surefire success for families, couples, groups of friends or solo travellers looking to find something different as a souvenir. Sant Ferran de Ses Roques is also a perfect location, with sweeping pedestrian areas full of places to have dinner, a drink and what could easily be defined as a Mediterranean night par excellence.

What's more, thanks to the extensive sailing times of Mediterranea Pitiusa (more info here), you can enjoy these markets when the sun has gone down, so they're the perfect way to round off a day at the beach or on the seas. Whether you decide to go before dinner or afterwards, you'll find a wonderfully laid-back atmosphere for you to decide what piece of Formentera spirit you want to take home. That said, choose well because the winter's long and you might regret not having bought that item you so admired...
